MLB Spring Training Begins  {Daily Dash: February 28, 2023}

  • MLB Spring Training underway
  • NAACP Awards & SAG Awards on Sunday (Angela Basset won entertainer of the year at the former, and Sally Field, honored with lifetime, achievement award at the latter)
  • Blake Shelton getting ready to leave The Voice after 23 seasons
  • National Pancake Day

Most of you know I used to be a tennis pro. But do you know what I did for a year after a back injury ended my career and forced me to move from the Bahamas to Florida?

That’s right, I worked in professional baseball.

For exactly one year, I was a marketing executive at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, FL. At the time, it was the spring training home to the St. Louis Cardinals and Montreal Expos. Being a good Chicago girl, I didn’t want to hang around the Cards. And as a French speaker, I preferred the company of the Expos.

But don’t let the title fool you. I did everything from ticket sales to slinging t-shirts into the stands during a game. I even sang the national anthem a few times (in English AND in French!).

I have some interesting stories around my time there and some unfortunate events are actually what end up pointing me to Jesus. So while you won’t catch me watching much baseball these days (unless you offer me bleacher seats to Wrigley Field), it’s still a rite of passage to see the boys of summer take the field again.

Many of us refuse to grow where God plants us. Therefore, we don’t take root anywhere. – Oswald Chambers

I pray you can hold tight to a faith that perseveres through the hard times today.
