For Christmas this year, my teens asked for a Disney+ membership. With that came the opportunity to watch the new Disney Pixar movie: Soul.

Interestingly enough, my teens split their reaction over the newest Pixar film. So if you’re wondering whether Soul is worth watching on Disney+ with your family (especially with younger kids), I hope these insights will help guide you.

Pixar’s Soul Review Split Among Teens

It’s rare that I can get both my teenagers to sit down a watch a movie with me anymore. But for Christmas, they both obliged!

I was actually surprised at how quickly we agreed on what film to watch. When we saw “Soul” pop up as soon as we logged into Disney+, we knew that was the one.

Since I know many of you are looking for a quick answer as to whether you should watch Soul with your kids, let me quikcly explain why their views were so split:

Soul Review from a 16-year-old Female

My teenage daughter really enjoyed Pixar’s Soul. But we both agreed it may go over the heads of younger viewers. The movie made her both think and laugh. And honestly, there were moments where we had to ask each other questions. While she liked it, and appreciated the diversity/representation it provided, she wasn’t sure if she’d want to watch it again.

Soul Review from a 14-year-old Male

From the beginning, I had a hard time keeping my teenage son off his phone and focused on the movie. For him, the movie moved too slowly and didn’t have enough humor. In full disclosure, he didn’t last until the end of the film. I wish I could tell you “Soul” opened up dialogue between all of us. Instead, the movie didn’t hold his attention or have the entertainment value of other Pixar films.

Disney Pixar SOUL Synopsis

Pixar Animation Studios’ all-new feature film “Soul” asks us to examine what makes you…YOU! Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx) is a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town.

But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth.

Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (voice of Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions.

My Review of Pixar Soul

I saw many sweet moments in Soul. At a time when we all need a new sense of hope and appreciation for the every day, Soul reminds us of the beautiful things that can be so easy to overlook.

I agree with my daughter: I enjoyed watching the movie, but I don’t feel the need to watch it again.

Also like my daughter, I appreciated the diversity and glimpse into the jazz culture. Disney & Pixar have a way of bringing a topic alive like no-one else. If nothing else, I’m so excited for a new generation that will be introduced to the power of jazz, finding your “spark” and appreciating the small things of life.

Watch Disney Pixar Soul Only on Disney+

I love that we were able to watch Disney Pixar Soul on Disney+. Even if you only wanted to watch Soul, you could subscribe for one month and cancel for less than $7.

We’ve done this in the past (hello HAMILTON!!!), but I finally bought the annual subscription for Christmas. Between movies like Mulan & Soul that can only be streamed on Disney+, series like The Mandalorian (of Baby Yoda fame 🙂 and classic Disney & Marvel films you already love, the annual fee is well worth it for our family.

Disney Plus Free Trial

I have never seen a Disney Plus free trial (and believe me, I’ve looked & looked!). As of the writing of this article, these are the Disney+ prices:

  • Disney+ Monthly Subscription price: $6.99/month (billed monthly & cancel anytime)
  • Disney + Annual Subscription price: $69.99/year (billed up front)

Those prices are before taxes.

If you want to save money on your Disney Plus subscription, I suggest signing up through Rakuten. I saved over $12 on my annual subscription just by shopping through the Rakuten link!

The other thing I love about Rakuten is that when a friend signs up for Rakuten through your referral link, you can earn $20. I save money every time I shop online with Rakuten!
