IN MY LIFE:
The US Open is officially underway! The final Grand Slam of 2018 kicked off the main draw yesterday and it lived up to the hype, but it was not without drama.

The ladies #1 seed, Simona Halep, lost in the first round, the first top seed in the open era to do so. While the Williams sisters each won their opening matches, the men’s side saw more pain.

Two sets of friends and countrymen played each other, each match ending with a retirement:

  • Ferrer retired in the second set against Nadal with an ankle issue. He spoke to fans after the match and admitted it would be his final Grand Slam match.
  • 18 year old Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime was forced to retire from his US Open first round match against fellow countryman Denis Shapovalov due to heart issues. . Shapovalov comforted his friend as he cried in his arms saying, “It’s just one match; we’ll play each other in the finals here one day.”

Unfortunately, I missed the Serena match last night because it was my daughter’s high school’s “meet the teacher” night. After working our way through her schedule and meeting her teachers, I’m encouraged for the year ahead, though I know she’s still putting a lot of pressure on herself.

PRAYER FOCUS: Friendly
After watching these male professional athletes comfort each other in tears, I’m reminded that friendships and relationships transcend all else. May we each be better friends today.
