Tips for helping the teachers and families of the victims of the Covenant School shooting tragedy…

Help the Covenant Families & Teachers {Daily Dash: April 5, 2023}

IN MY LIFE:

It’s only been a little over a week since the tragic shooting at the Covenant School here in Nashville. This week, several of the grieving families are now having to attend the funerals of their loved ones.

Even though the national news may be moving on, those of us here in Nashville are still wanting to help in any way we can. For those of you who feel the same way, here is a list of practical ways to help their community:

Practical Ways to Help the Covenant School Families & Teachers

Counseling: Help pay for counseling for any Covenant student or family that asks for it at Daystar Ministries.

Gift Cards: Donate a gift card or money for meals for Covenant teachers. You can also Venmo @julie-knestrick to contribute to the gift cards directly.

Donate: Donate to a special fund set up through The Community Foundation.

Advocate: Contact your senators & state representatives to help advocate for change.

Support the Families of the Victims Directly

Big Mike: Give support to the family of “Big Mike”, the custodian that always wore a big smile and a helping spirit.

Cindy Peak: Provide care for the family of Cindy, the substitute teacher, who has taught for years and loved on many children along the way.

Hallie Scruggs: Show the Scruggs family support as they grieve the loss of their precious little girl, Hallie.

Evelyn Dieckhaus: Love on the family of Evelyn with a donation.

William Kinney: Support little William’s family as they grieve.

Katherine Koonce: According to a friend, at this time, there has not been a specific donation set up for Katherine Koonce or her family. But knowing her, she would want to care for the children. You can honor her with donations to the counseling center above, the Community Foundation, or even directly to The Covenant School.

Community Support

Here are some ways our community is supporting victims:

Concert: “A Night of Joy Celebrating the Covenant School” will take place on April 12 at the Fisher Center at Belmont University. Over a dozen country stars have committed to attend and perform, including Carrie Underwood, Thomas Rhett, The War & Treaty, and more. My friend Annie F. Downs will serve as host.

Storytime: Join my friend, The Nashville Mom (Dawn Burns), for a storytime benefitting Friends of Covenant plus the First Responders Fund. 15% of all the sales at The Getalong will be given to the Covenant Fund, as well as $5 from any of her books sold.

Cakes for Covenant: My ‘sweet’ friend, Brooke O’Dell of Sugar Drop is hosting a city-wide virtual bake sale. 100% of the profits will go to the Covenant Church community.

Please remember to keep these families and this community in your prayers, especially in the weeks, months, and years to come.

IN THE NEWS:

  • NASA selected 4-person crew for Artemis II mission
  • “Coastal Cowgirl” is now a trend
  • CMT music awards held for first time in Austin
  • LSU women won first NCAA basketball championship;  UConn beat SDSU in men’s championship
  • National Deep Dish Pizza Day

IN THE WORD:

We must continually maintain an adventurous attitude toward Him, despite any potential personal risk – Oswald Chambers

PRAYER FOCUS: Trust

Even when we wrestle with God, I pray we can still trust his faithfulness. It’s ok to feel both grief and joy on the same day. After a Bible study on Psalm 22 today, I learned the God who saved the suffering King (David) is worthy of our trust and praise.
