The Right Way to Raise a Princess Today

What little girl doesn’t dream about becoming a princess?

The thought of tiaras, castles and gowns alone can cause internal squeals of delight.

Add in the bevy of beauties Disney dazzles before our daughters on a daily basis and you can see why our little girls find a hard time discerning between fairy tales and real life.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Cinderella and Ariel as much as the next girl and may or may not have even bought a mini tiara barrette for myself while my daughter was getting her hair and makeup done at the “Bippidi Boppidi Boutique” on our last trip to Disney World, but that doesn’t represent our reality.

In fact, today’s “princess” may even be veering in the complete opposite direction of her ancient times counterpart. Instead of waiting for her knight on a white horse to ride in and rescue her, today’s princess stories feature young girls balking at tradition and doing life on her own.

So what’s a girl to do?
Better yet, what’s the mother raising daughters today to do?

While we may not be able to agree on a single ‘right’ way to raise a princess today, we can certainly turn to God’s word for guidance on some non-negotiables.

3 Keys to Raising a Princess Today

Know God’s Love

But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever. ~ Psalm 52:8

The heart of raising a princess today begins with knowing love, and not just any love, but the love that comes from God. While we can never fully comprehend God’s love, once we embrace and trust in God’s love, we can pass that on to our daughters. When they trust in the love of God, that translates to security in their own lives.

Grow God’s Love

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ~ 2 Peter 1:5-8

Once we accept God’s love, it needs to flourish in our hearts and the hearts of our girls. As you can imagine, this is not a ‘one and done’ process – growing God’s love involves making “every effort” to add to your faith. And as we learn from this verse in 2 Peter, growing in God’s love isn’t just about adding wisdom and knowledge, but developing the other characteristics that complement God’s love, especially when it comes to growing that within our girls.

Show God’s Love

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God;but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. ~ 1 John 4:10-12

Just as faith without works is dead, so is love without action. After all, what does it mean to say you love someone if you never demonstrate that love? As we see from the verses in 1 John above, God’s love is made complete in us when we love one another.
