Preserving that “favorite blanket smell”

It’s funny what kids latch on to.

Right after our son was born, one of my husband’s customers bought us a baby gift that has since come to be known affectionately as “Gee”. It’s a small, square, blue blanket by Barefoot Dreams that my son still does not part with.

When he was about two and we realized this “Gee” wasn’t going anywhere, we quickly realized we needed a backup blanket in case the original was lost. We were lucky enough to track down the last known blanket made in that style and color (or so we were told by the salesperson…I felt like saying, “Lady, we’re a sure thing…”).

Of course, the first time we lost the original and tried to pass off the back up as the real thing, we were totally called on it! Not only was it not chewed in the same places, but it lacked his “favorite blanket smell”. At the time, I compared the smell to un-brushed teeth and baby drool, but hey, it made him happy. However, whenever he would shove it in my face to experience the same joy, I cringed.

Thus, it has since become a never-ending quest of mine to find a way to preserve the essence of his favorite blanket that he has come to know and love while discovering a way for me to feel like I was giving him a clean, fresh-scented blanket when it came out of the wash. The challenge has been discovering a way to wash & dry it without overpowering it with perfume.

Since we use fragrance free detergent, the task fell to the dryer sheet. Being sensitive to smells myself, most scented sheets we tried were overly-perfumed and left our son’s blanket smelling a bit too girlie. But with the Arm & Hammer Fabric Softener Sheets in Lavender & Linen, we’ve finally achieved the perfect balance of fresh, yet essential blankie scent!

I want to hear about your favorite item that you try to preserve every time you wash it. And to give you a little added incentive to come clean (pun intended), Arm & Hammer has given me a $25 Visa Gift Card to giveaway to one lucky reader!

I have a quilt made by my grandmother that is sort of falling apart. I have had it repaired and would love to “freshen” it up with a nice hung on the line smell!

Could I say, I would love to freshen up my husband. He dips tobacco and everything he touches stinks. On a serious note: his chair would be the first thing! I have threatened to throw it out the door it smells so bad! I have tried to clean it, but the holes in the fabric get bigger. He just will not let go of it or his tobacco.

Our child’s old blue bear. It can’t even survive hand washing these days, though!
