And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name” – Exodus 33:17
Are you on a first name basis with God…
You Know My Name: Devotion Day 41
When you don’t see a friend for awhile or talk to them everyday, it can be difficult to remember what you like about them. After all, being in their presence makes communication much easier.
Just like the friend that drifts away, so too can our relationship with God if we don’t interact with Him regularly. And I’m not just talking about mealtime prayers, I’m talking about consistent conversations like we’d have with a trusted friend.
Exodus 33:11 says, “The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.”
Our prayers don’t have to be mighty or overly spiritual; you come to understand someone better the more you converse with them. So the more we speak with God and read His word, the more we will develop our own language and mutual understanding.
Sometimes, prayers are as simple as repeating back the promises of God. In verse 12, Moses says back to the Lord, “You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you.”
God doesn’t NEED us to remind Him of His promises, but He WANTS us to be in dialogue with Him and those reminders help strengthen our own faith in the times when we don’t know what to say.
Do you consider God to be a friend? If not, maybe you should ask Him why not.
