She (Hagar) gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

Genesis 16:13

God sees you…

Devotion Day 17: The God Who Sees Me

Hagar did what Sarai asked of her, but after she did exactly that, Sarai hated Hagar and mistreated her. (I could write a whole separate devotion on what happens when we give in to our wants and desires apart from God’s plan, but that’s for another time).

What’s important to pay attention to here is that when Hagar fled, the angel of the Lord found her!

Even when we run…
Even when life doesn’t turn out like we thought it would…
Even when unfortunate circumstances happen to us…
Even when we don’t understand why we are where we are…
God finds us, meets us where we are, and provides a way out.

After Hagar listened to the angel of the Lord, she gave this name to the Lord: “The God who sees me” or “El Roi” in Hebrew.

God is a holy, compassionate, living, great and jealous God…and yes, He sees us and appears to us when we look for Him.

In the very next chapter, the Lord appeared to Abraham to make his covenant with him. In Hebrew, God is referred to in Gen 17:1 as God Almighty or “El Shaddai”. This is the same God appearing to different people with different needs and circumstances in different forms.

God will meet you where you are TODAY. Are you willing to sit and wait for him to appear?
